How sex-linked inheritance works
A sex-linked gene sits on the X chromosome. A mother has two X chromosomes and passes one at random; a father has a single X (which he gives only to daughters) and a Y (which he gives only to sons). That asymmetry drives everything. For a recessive trait a son needs just one mutant allele to be affected, because he has no second X to mask it, while a daughter needs two. That is why colorblindness and hemophilia are far more common in males, and why an affected father passes the allele to every daughter but never to a son. A heterozygous daughter is an unaffected carrier who can still pass the allele on.

H is the normal allele, h the mutant. For a dominant trait the single mutant allele (h) causes the condition in both sexes, so there are no unaffected carriers.
FAQ
Why are these traits more common in males?
Males have one X, so a single recessive mutant allele shows the trait; females need two copies. Hence colorblindness and hemophilia are mostly male.
What is a carrier?
A heterozygous female (XHXh): unaffected for a recessive trait but able to pass the allele. Half her sons are affected, half her daughters are carriers.
Will an affected father's sons be affected?
Not from him — sons get his Y, not his X. But all his daughters inherit his mutant X and are at least carriers.
What is criss-cross inheritance?
The trait passes affected-father to carrier-daughter to affected-grandson, seeming to skip a generation through an unaffected mother.
How is X-linked dominant different?
One mutant allele affects both sexes, so heterozygous daughters are affected (no carriers). Affected fathers pass it to all daughters, no sons.
